Gold Valley - Sunday 25th November 2007

Sunday saw us return to Gold Valley for Round 5 of the “Southern Angler Club League”. With the pegging being 2 sections on the canal bank of Gold, 3 sections on Middle Lake and 1 section on Bungalow Lake, I really wanted to draw Gold as even if you don’t draw a “Carp” peg, you can still have a days fishing for silvers.

So where did I draw……………..Peg 74 on Middle Lake ! I actually quite fancied the peg as the pegs were nicely spread out but unfortunately, as I had been warned, all the carp recently seem to have been in “The islands” – pegs 77-82, which were also in my section.

Anyway, to cut a long and boring story short. I fished a lead with Corn, pellet and luncheon meat – no not all at the same time, and with no signs at all, not even a liner. I then tried a maggot feeder, on which I had a crucian and 2 rudd.

Everyone in the islands were catching a few carp but apparently the bites were a bit finicky, Tony West on Peg 79 had to rescue his rod from the lake at one time when a gentle bite pulled his rod in whilst he was chatting on the phone and Jeff Simmons, yes the one who usually catches very little also admitted to almost losing his rod twice !

Out of boredom, I eventually set up a waggler to fish on the bottom with maggot and caught a few roach and another crucian to finish with 5-14-0 and 2 points in the section, beating only Derek White at the next peg. Graham Ford won the section with 32-10-0 from Peg 82, followed by Jeff Simmons 30-8-0 – no, I didn’t believe it either and Chris Martin on Peg 81 with 9 small carp for 27-8-0.

The most intriguing peg to peg battle of the match took place almost opposite me where - In the red corner was team mate Mark “Smiffy” Smith fishing the pole for silvers and in the blue corner Mick “The Mauler” Keeper fishing the lead for carp.
Smiffy raced into an early lead as Mick sat motionless for what seemed like hours – infact we had to check at one time that he was still alive ! However, Mick suddenly leapt into life and landed a carp of about 6lb which dragged him back into the contest.
Smiffy continued to catch consistently and looked to me as though he might be winning the section that was until with about 30 minutes to go Mick had another carp of about the same size ! At the weigh in Mick’s 2 carp went 13-9-0 whilst Smiffy’s net of silvers went………………………..13-9-0 !!!! as they shared the section money. Smiffy’s pick up would have been going towards the new 4th section for his Tournament Pro to replace the one he caught with his foot and snapped in half – however, all our money won in the league goes into the team pool ! Thanks chaps.

Elsewhere, another team member, Paul Taylor (Pictured above) won the match with 55-10-0 from Peg 3 on Gold fishing luncheon on the lead and casting it to the rope – I’m not sure exactly how many carp he had but I do know he had one of 23-4-0. Now that is what I call a bonus fish !

The Top six were as follows:-

Paul Taylor Leatherhead DAS Gold 3 55-10-0
Glen Wills Foxy Five Bungelow 3 50-8-0
Graham Ford Alan’s Upbeats Middle 82 32-10-0
Donald Garnish Foxy Five Gold 5 30-12-0
Keith Arthur Total Fishing.com Gold 12 30-11-0
Jeff Simmons Molesey Middle 77 30-8-0

Foxy five took top place in the team event with 41.5 points, followed by Leatherhead DAS – no thanks to me on 36.5, followed by Alan’s Upbeats 35.5 and Total Fishing.com on 33.5

So, with one round to go at Willinghurst in two weeks time, the league table looks like this:-

Leatherhead DAS 13 Points
Foxy Five 20 Points
Willinghurst Cabin 20 Points
Alan’s Upbeats 24 Points
Molloy’s Mob 25 Points
Willinghurst A 28 Points
Molesey 28 Points
Total Fishing.com 30 Points
Decca 32 Points

Unfortunately, I’ve got to work on Wednesday, so my next outing looks like being the Surrey Winter League match at Gold Valley next Sunday – I can hardly wait !!!!!!!!!!!
